Definition

Notified body

A conformity assessment body designated by a Member State and notified to the Commission to perform third-party CRA assessments.

An independent conformity assessment body that a Member State has designated and notified to the Commission and other Member States to carry out third-party assessments under the CRA (EU-type examination, quality-assurance audits). Class II important products and, pending certification schemes, critical products require a notified body; Class I products need one unless harmonised standards are fully applied. Provisions on notification of bodies apply from 11 June 2026 so that bodies exist before full application.
